PNG to ICO for Windows shortcuts

Windows shortcuts still work best with ICO files because the format can hold several icon sizes inside one file.

Why ICO works better than PNG

A PNG is one image. An ICO can contain several versions, so Windows can choose a small or large bitmap depending on the shortcut, folder view or installer screen.

Use transparent padding

If the source artwork touches the edge, the small icon can feel cramped. Add a little transparent space around the mark before converting.

Check the icon in File Explorer

After downloading the ICO, test it on a real shortcut. The large preview and the small taskbar-size view can reveal different problems.
