How to merge PDFs without messing up the page order

Most PDF merge mistakes are simple order mistakes. The safest workflow is to name your source files clearly, preview the list, then keep the originals until the combined PDF has been checked.

Sort the files first

Rename scans or exports with numbers before uploading if the order matters, such as 01-cover, 02-form and 03-receipt. Then arrange the upload list before pressing merge.

Watch out for mixed page sizes

A merge does not normally redesign the pages. If one PDF is A4 and another is Letter or landscape, the combined file can contain a mixture. That is fine for records, but worth checking before printing.

Keep the originals

Do not delete the source files until you have opened the merged PDF and checked the first page, last page and any page where the order could easily go wrong.
